High-Performance Computing (HPC) is a fundamental basis for many scientific disciplines and shows growing demand. In Germany, a multi-layered supply has been defined to meet this demand, consisting of Tier-1 computers for cutting-edge research and a national high-performance computer structure (NHR) as Tier-2 for large projects on an application basis. Another layer, Tier-3, includes local systems, e.g. at universities, as well as state infrastructure for general HPC requirements. Supply in Lower Saxony has so far been inadequate at this level. Furthermore, there is currently no overall concept to enable researchers to ensure effective and efficient handling of parallel computers on a broad front. These gaps are being closed with the HPC.NDS project.OUR SERVICE
We close supply gaps in high-performance computing (HPC) for Lower Saxon universities by providing need-based Tier-3 infrastructure with computing resources (CPU/GPU nodes) and comprehensive support – such as through Science Support Teams and Research Software Engineering (RSE). Within the framework of Hochschule.digital Niedersachsen, GWDG (Göttingen) and TU Braunschweig (DS³ network) coordinate the operation, while six locations (Göttingen, Braunschweig, Hannover, Clausthal, Oldenburg, Osnabrück) offer consulting. For users, the complex application process of higher-tier systems is eliminated; instead, low-threshold access with easy booking enables the use of additional resources. Universities benefit from reduced investment and operating costs, flexible capacity distribution, and transparent billing. The project thus promotes efficient cutting-edge research and teaching through scalable, well-supported HPC solutions. Our ServicesLOCATIONS
We offer state-of-the-art HPC infrastructure at multiple locations in Lower Saxony.
